Link Pop..You Hear it every Where… What is “Link Pop”?

A website’s link popularity, often called “Link Pop“, can be determined by the quality, quantity, and relevance of the other websites that link to its page.

What is Google PR?

Page Rank“, sometime abbreviated PR, was developed by Google’s founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.  Here is how Google describes the Page Rank system: PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are  themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages ”important.” Everything You Need to Know About Links

The best kind of link is an “Inbound Link“. An Inbound Link basically means another site links to your site. This generally happens because the webmaster of the site considers that the information on your site is valuable to his or her readers. Your page ranking will improve significantly if the website has a higher page ranking than yours and if there is obvious relevance between the two sites.

An “Outbound Link” means that your site offers a link to another site. Outbound links don’t hurt your popularity if they are relevant sites, but they don’t necessarily help.

Then we have “Reciprocal” and “Non-Reciprocal” links. A reciprocal link means that two sites connect to each other. A non-reciprocal link is a one-way link. Search engines are able to tell the difference between reciprocal and non-reciprocal links. Obviously non-reciprocal links are more credible because there is no direct benefit to the linker, and will thus increase your link popularity.

In order to create “link pop,” you should focus on creating as many inbound non-reciprocal links as possible. One of the best ways to do this is through link directories.

The Importance of Link Directories

Essentially, a link directory provides its users with a collection of links organized by topic. There are thousands of directories to choose from. DMOZ and Yahoo! are the most heavily weighted.

Directories exist solely to provide users with valuable resources. They are edited and organized by humans, so appearing in a directory can be a measure of a site’s worth. If your website is listed, it is viewed by users as a credible  source.

It is important to get your link on as many directories as you can. There are two benefits. It will generate targeted traffic to your site, and it will improve your page ranking. Once your website has circulated through a few popular directories, you can watch your web sales shoot through the roof!

Top 10 Ways to Improve Your Site’s “Link Pop”

10.) Post comments in discussion groups and on message boards.  Be sure to make useful, relevant statements based on topics being discussed.  Comments that only contain a link will usually be deleted or banned.  If you make valuable contributions, people will want to find out what else you have to say by visiting your site.

9.) Give away awards to other sites that you find particularly outstanding.  Provide a graphic with the award title and a link to your webpage.

8.) Email other webmasters and simply ask for a link.  Let them know why your website will benefit their readers, and provide a pre-coded html link for them to cut and paste to their page.

7.) Never underestimate the power of blogs.  Talk to bloggers about links and posts about your website.  The blogging community is ever-growing, and blogmasters are always looking for cool new things to post.

6.) Write a site review on your webpage and send the site’s webmaster a link.  Who would pass up an opportunity to advertise a great testimonial?

5.) If your site distributes a newsletter, start a contest for ad space.  Offer to advertise a website in your publication to the sites that offer you a free link.

4.) Write free articles for an article directory (search “article directory” in Yahoo! or Google for submission options).  This allows people to read your work and publish it for free.  Make sure to include a Bio Box that includes a link to your site.  Stipulate that the article may be reprinted for free as long as the Bio Box is included.  This will instantaneously provide extra links to your page when people reprint your work.

3.) Write to webmasters and compliment their site.  Often, they will want to include your kind statements in a testimonial section, and a link to your site will give the quote credibility.

2.) Start your own reciprocal linking campaign.  Write to webmasters of quality, relevant sites that you want your readers to see.  Choose wisely!  Tell them why your site will benefit their readers, and show them how prominently their link will be displayed on your page.  Make sure to include a pre-made html link to your site that can be easily cut and pasted.

1.) Submit to as many directories as you can.  Webmasters agree that directory submission is the BEST way to gain targeted traffic to your site.  By listing your site in a directory, web users will view your page as a reliable resource tailored specifically to their search criteria.

How Link Pop Affects Your Website’s Page Rank

What is Link Pop?

Link popularity, sometimes referred to as “Link Pop,” plays a very important role in determining a website’s visibility among the top returned search results.  Your site’s link pop will be determined by the quality, quantity, and relevance of the other websites that link to your page.

What is Page Rank?

Page Rank,” sometimes abbreviated PR, was developed by Google’s founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.  Here is how Google describes the “Page Rank” system:

Page Rank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.”

Important, high-quality sites receive a higher Page Rank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don’t match your query. So, Google combines Page Rank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page’s content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it’s a good match for your query.
Page Rank is rated on a scale of PR-0 to PR-10.  A site with a ranking of PR-10 is much higher than one rated PR-0.  When a site has a high page ranking, there will be more opportunities for search engine users to locate and view the site.  Thus, more traffic will be routed to that site because it is viewed by the web community as a valuable resource.

What Does This Mean For You?

In theory, the more “popular” a website is, the higher its PR will be.  Here’s a quick recap on how to sustain strong “link pop” and Google PR:

To Improve Your “Link Pop”:

· Generate as many one-way, non-reciprocal links as possible.  Make sure your link is listed by credible websites ONLY.

· Your “Link Pop” can be improved when the websites that link to yours have a higher Google PR than you do.  This is considered a heavily weighted “vote” towards your site.  However, do make sure to link to pages with various PR’s.

· Create reciprocal links with websites that are relevant to yours.  If your website sells cat toys, link to a pet lover’s site, and cat-sitting service, etc.

It Doesn’t Matter If:

· You provide one-way links to other sites that are relevant to yours.  As long as you don’t have too many uncategorized links, this will not hurt your site’s “Link Pop“; however, it does not directly contribute to improving it.

Tips to Avoid Diminishing Your Site’s PR:

· Do not submit your website to “Link Farms” or “Free-For-All” (FFA) directories.  Google views these as spam sites and will thus lower your PR.

· Exchanging links with irrelevant websites can lower your PR.  ONLY reciprocate links with similar credible sources.  Just think: “Is this valuable to my readers?”

· Make sure to vary your links.  A reciprocal-link campaign with no non-reciprocals tells Google your site isn’t worthy of one-way links.

The bottom line: A strong “Link Pop” and “Page Rank” equals more visitors to your website!
